It was all Greek in aid of SENSE At the Rotary Club of Finchley on Saturday 14th June. 2008
The President of The Rotary Club of Finchley, Andrew Galatopoulos, held a 'Greek Evening' at the Glenlyn Hotel to raise funds for SENSE in Barnet, a day centre for people with deaf blindness and associated disabilities. The evening commenced with a small presentation by Graham Nolan from SENSE outlining their work at the Centre. This was followed by a Greek Buffet dinner of various Greek dishes including Mousaka, stuffed vine leaves, dips and Greek pastries, all prepared by The President's wife, Kalistine, an honorary member of the Club and the President of The Inner Wheel Club of Finchley. After dinner those present were entertained by the pupils of Manor Hill Greek School, an evening/weekend school where 3rd and 4th generation Greek Cypriot children are able not only to learn Greek but to learn something about their culture. The pupils gave a demonstration of Greek folk dancing and finally a number of the guests were 'encouraged' to join in the dancing! During the course of the evening President Andrew presented a Paul Harris Fellowship to Past President Anne Rowland, their first lady President, not only for her work at the Club and at District level, but also for all her work in the Community including local Schools and her Church.
The event was supported by Cyprus Airways who donated a single return ticket to Cyprus which was auctioned by Cllr, Brian Coleman, a member of the Rotary Club of Finchley. Prizes were also donated by John Lewis & Marks & Spencer of Brent Cross, and Barclays Bank. The Manor Hill Greek School gave their services free and Paul Winter, owner of the Glenlyn, also a member of the Club, made no charge for the use of the hotel. The evening raised approx £800 and will be topped up by the Club's Charity Account to bring the total raised to £1000. A cheque will be presented to the centre at a Breakfast meeting of the Club.
