FINALS OF THE YOUNG INVENTOR OF THE YEAR 2008 held at Ravenscroft College of Science & Technology on 8th May, 2008
The purpose of the competition is to promote and recognise achievements by individual students in the field of design and technology Rotary is committed to encouraging young people in design and technology fields as well as fostering closer liaison between industry and education. The Young Inventor of the Year Competition often gives students their first real contact with industry with hands on experience. On Thursday, May 8th, 2008 The Ravenscroft Science and Technology College hosted the 11th annual Young Inventor Competition sponsored by the Rotary Club of Finchley and Rotary District 1130. After a number of preliminary rounds, a total of 49 finalists from 7 local schools produced amazing and original innovative work of products to be entered for GCSE and A Level examinations in Resistant Materials and Graphics. Judging was difficult and exhibits ranged from the practical and utilitarian to the decorative and aesthetic. Detailed portfolios showed students' awareness of marketability, enviromental and health and safety issues. This year, as in other years, well known commercial firms have been consulted by the competitors and have received their advice. A number of items are being seriously considered for production. Prizes and certificates were presented by Cllr. Maureen Braun, Mayor of the London Borough of Barnet. Also present was the Rotary District Governor 1130 Colin Matthews along with head teacher Mary Karaolis and representatives from the Rotary Clubs of Friern Barnet & Whetstone, the Centenary E-club, Enfield Chace, Hillside, Hanwell & Northfield. Our thanks also to The Friends of the Rotary Club of Finchley who supported us in this event.
