The Rotary Club of Finchley

 

 

 

 The Rotary Club of Finchley works closely with schools within the Community and promotes and sponsors The Young Inventor competition  in Barnet.

This competition has been supported  and hosted for a number of years by Ravenscroft College of Science & Technology.  The Head Teacher  Mrs. Mary Karaolis. along with members of her staff have supported not only The Finchley Rotary Club but also Barnet & East Barnet Rotary Club who have sponsored an Interact Club within the school.

At a meeting of the Finchley Rotary Club at The Glenlyn Hotel on the 24th June, 2008 the District Governor, Collin Matthews,  praised the work of the school and in particular of Mrs. Mary Karaolis and presented her with a Paul Harris Fellowship in recognition of her work for both the school  and Rotary to the benefit of many pupils

A Paul Harris Fellowship is one of the highest honours bestowed by Rotary and is in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world.

In additon  

The Club  has also been involved with  a project at St James Catholic High School, a Specialist Science and Sports College, in NW London, to conserve energy and the local environment.

A classroom has been built by students and staff using straw bales on a base of used lorry tyres.  Donated double glazed windows have been installed.  The school has also installed a wind turbine to provide energy together with solar panels on the school roof.  Students and staff made a presentation to a European Environment group. They also have support from a London Borough of Barnet Environmental Officer.

The Rotary Club of Finchley has donated funds to provide and set up a surveillance camera to observe the patterns of behaviour and habitat of local wild life.  Data will be stored on a computer and used for school and local community projects (including Wild Life Associations)

 Teachers and selected pupils were recently entertained at 10 Downing Street by Messrs Blair and Brown. The project is also being filmed by ITV.
